Process for updating RVS student passwords

Posted on

To enhance security measures on core RVS services and to meet new minimum-security requirements on our third-party services, we need to ensure our RVS user accounts have secure passwords. The best way to ensure secure password standards are met and access to core systems is maintained, is to integrate more services into our staff and student directories.

What this means

for Students in Grades 5-8

If students in Grades 5-8 have not changed to a secure password and are still using their default PowerSchool id as their password, we strongly recommend it be changed over the next couple of weeks.  After Monday April 29th, 2024 Grade 5-8 students will only be able to access their PowerSchool information by logging in with their RVS provided Google username and a secure password.   Early in the 2024/ 2025 school year, all Grade 5-8 students that are still using a default password will be locked out of the RVS network.

for Students in Grades k-4

Students will still have access to the local PowerSchool username and password for the remainder of the year.   However, PowerSchool has removed the ability to display student passwords therefore lists of usernames and passwords can no longer be printed for teachers.   If a student has forgotten their local PowerSchool password, the school Administrative Assistant will need to assist the student in creating a secure password within PowerSchool.

Process for updating RVS student passwords  (Grade 5- 12 students)

Students can update their current password by using the SSPR - Self-Service Password Reset website. Students will log in to this website with their existing RVS Google username and password and click "Change Password" (please note, RVS Google usernames do not include the @rvschools.ab.ca extension).  If students forget their password, they will need assistance from their School Technologist to complete a password reset.

Password Requirements for a secure password include:

  • Minimum 8 characters
  • at least 1 Capital letter
  • at least 1 Number
  • at least 1 Special Character
